Il suo bianco e nero intensamente personale ed espressivo ha permesso a Jacob Aue Sobol di guadagnarsi la reputazione di una delle stelle nascenti della fotografia, fino a farlo diventare, nel 2010, membro di Magnum Photos. Ha ricevuto il prestigioso Leica European Publishers’ Award nel 2008 per il suo lavoro “I, Tokyo”, ed è a lui che Leica Camera si è rivolta per testare sul campo, in anteprima assoluta, la nuova Leica M Monochrom. Il primo banco di prova è stata la tappa moscovita del suo nuovo reportage intitolato “Arrivals and Departures”. Di seguito alcuni pensieri del fotografo danese, alla vigilia della partenza, sul suo nuovo lavoro e sul perché del bianco e nero…
In questo viaggio mi recherò tre città, dove non sono mai stato prima: Mosca, UlanBaatar e Pechino. Il treno mi porterà dalle foreste russe nel deserto mongolo e, infine,attraverso le montagne a Pechino. Il treno sarà il filo rosso che collega queste capitali.Dalla finestra Seguirò il cambiamento del paesaggio e il cambiamento di umore.E ‘un viaggio che ho sempre voluto intraprendere; Il viaggio leggendario lungo laTransiberiana. Tanta storia ha avuto luogo lungo questo percorso , tanti occhi hanno visto quello che sto per vedere. Voglio scoprire se viaggiare con il treno mi darà un’altra prospettiva. In Danimarca è possibile attraversare il paese in cinque ore di treno, ma in Russia, le distanze sono enormi. Mi chiedo se la connessione tra persone e luoghi si sentirà diverso considerando il fatto che io passerò ogni albero, ogni casa e ogni villaggio sulla strada per Pechino?
Tutto è nuovo
Per me la Russia, la Mongolia e la Cina sono tutte terre sconosciute, e così è la mia attrezzatura in questo cammino: la nuova Leica M Monochrome e un apo-Summicron-obiettivo da 50 mm. E’ anche la mia prima volta con una macchina fotografica digitale, e la mia prima volta con una Leica. Tutto è nuovo, ma la mia ambizione è sempre la stessa. Userò la macchina fotografica come uno strumento per creare il contatto, la vicinanza e l’intimità. Voglio incontrare la gente, per il collegamento con le città, per rendere i luoghi memorabili, anche se è solo per un breve periodo.
Bianco e Nero
Lavorare con la fotografia in bianco e nero è sempre stato il modo più diretto per me per raggiungere le domande più esistenziali. In bianco e nero sento mie le immagini che non sono vincolati ad un luogo o a un tempo specifico, ma creano il proprio universo. Mi piace pensare che sia qualcosa d’altro e di più di quello che mostrano. Almeno questa è la mia ambizione; di concentrarci sulle nostre emozioni e uno stato d’animo che non è definito da come guardiamo o da dove veniamo, ma sulle cose che ci legano e ci rendono dipendenti l’uno dall’altro.
Huge distances in a slow pace
On this journey I will visit three cities, where I have never been before: Moscow, Ulan Batar, and Beijing. The train will bring me from the Russian forests to the Mongolian desert and finally through the mountains to Beijing. The train will be the red thread connecting these capitals. From the window I will follow the change of landscape and the change of mood.It’s a trip I have always wanted to take; The legendary journey along the Trans Siberian Railway. So much history has taken place along these tracks, so many eyes have seen what I am about to see. I want to find out if traveling with the train will give me another perspective. In Denmark you can cross the country in five hours by train, but in Russia the distances are huge. I wonder if the connection between people and places will feel different considering the fact that I will pass every tree, every house and every village on my way to Beijing?
Everything is new
To me Russia, Mongolia and China are all unknown lands, and so is my equipment on this journey: The brand new Leica M Monochrome and a 50 mm apo-summicron-lens. On top of this, it is also my first time using a digital camera, and my first time using a Leica-camera at all. Everything is new, but then again, my ambition is always the same. I will use the camera as a tool to create contact, closeness and intimacy. I want to meet people, to connect with the cities, to make the places mine, even if it’s just for a short while.
Black and White
Working with black and white photography has always been the most direct way for me to reach more existential questions. In black and white I feel my images are not bound to a specific location or time, but they create their own universe. I like to think they are about something else and more than just what they show. At least that is my ambition; to focus on our emotions and a state of mind that is not defined by how we look or where we come from, but on the things that connect us and make us dependent on each other.
